La canción de la semana #375

...is ¿Quién será? composed and recorded in 1953 by Mexican Pablo Beltrán Ruiz. Its English version, Sway, was made famous by Dean Martin the following year. The song was covered by numerous artists, from Cliff Richard to Björk and Jennifer Lopez, and remains as (if not more) popular today as 60 years ago.

The videoclip from Escuela de vagabundos (1954) featuring Pedro Infante.

La canción de la semana #209

This song was performed by Louis Armstrong, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Fania All-Stars and Bebo Valdés, to name just a few. According to Wikipedia, El Manisero (The Peanut Vendor), written by Moisés Simons, "is possibly the most famous piece of music created by a Cuban musician." Since its first performance by Rita Montaner in 1928, El Manisero has been recorded more than 160 times! Perhaps the best known version is the one by Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra, featuring Antonio Machín.

La canción de la semana #159

Cuba Te Llama, from the album Night of the Living Mambo by Mamborama. (According to founder Bill Wolfer, he came across the name "Mamborama" in Vienna but since has discovered that Tito Puente had an album by the name of Mamborama! back in '50s.)

Orquesta Anacaona, Cuba's oldest all-girl dance band, was founded in 1932 by the sisters Castro (not related to Fidel). It was named after the Indian Queen, Anacaona. Thanks to this publication in Times Online, you can enjoy some of the songs recorded back in 1937. All of them are great but my choice is Oh! Marambé Maramba.
