La canción de la semana #1005
In 1862, the famous Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres created a guitar with back and sides of papier-mâché. In the 21st century, the Italian guitarist Federica Artuso recorded the album called Papier-Mâché where she plays on replicas of the Torres guitar built by Fabio Zontini. I learned about this from the Radio Clásica programme La guitarra de papel (broadcast on 16 January 2026).
From the above album, Milonguea del ayer by the Argentine composer and guitarist Abel Fleury.

...is Cançó No. 6 (Canción No. 6) by the Catalan composer Federico Mompou, from the cycle Cançons i danses. Originally written for piano, it was a favourite encore of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. This song appears in the 1976 film Cría Cuervos by Carlos Saura. I liked the classical guitar version as played by the Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe in the recent (12 December 2025) Tiny Desk Concert.

As the year draws to close, I cannot ignore this mega-hit any longer. It won this year's three Latin Grammies including Song of the Year as well as Best Spanish Video and Best Spanish Language Song at Los Premios 40 Principales... If you were in any Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country this year, or any bar that plays Latin music, you couldn't possibly have missed it: Bailando written by Descemer Bueno (of Yerba Buena fame) and performed by Enrique Iglesias. Personally, I like the salsa version of this song by Croma Latina more than the original.

El Choclo was composed at the turn of the 20th Century by Argentine Ángel Villoldo. According to Roberto Selles,
Undoubtedly, next to La cumparsita it is the tango tune most widely spread.
The vocal versions of El Choclo were recorded by Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Julio Iglesias and many others. But I'd rather stick to the instrumental. I really like this rendition by Italian jazz pianist Paolo Di Sabatino.
